The WS-C6504-E is best used with the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Supervisor Engine 720. Combined, the two have a maximum performance output of 80 Gbps switching capacity per slot. It is best used inside of small and medium sized access and distribution networks; however, it is also suitable for provider edge applications. All of this performance comes in a five rack unit that is highly transferable and mobile. The 6504 can also be configured in a number of ways with up to three line cards with a single supervisor as the engine. Another common configuration for more complex routing is to have a pair of supervisor engines with one or two line cards. 
As one of the broadest ranges of interface modules on the market today, the WS-C6504-E can serve as a solution for many different types of applications. A cost effective solution for networks on a budget, it is a great choice for results-oriented companies.
